Unpopular opinion, I know.
Rose was okay during S1, but then she turned into this two dimensional character who’s entire existence revolved around the Doctor. Not only that but RTD’s general Rose Tyler loving writer’s boner made it so her character devolved from okay young woman to a shadow of the character who had been introduced to us in ‘Rose’. I’m also highly bothered by fandom’s general disregard to her choice of using the Dimension cannon. Instead, most people opt to see it as a testament to Rose’s love and devotion towards the Doctor. IMO had Martha, Amy, or River done something like that due to their love for the Doctor, fandom would have thrown a fit over how “wrong” they were. I know we were only shown the positive part of her choice, that being Rose’s reunion with the Doctor. However, I can’t help but think that during the time she was being shot through various dimensions in order to find her original universe, that she may have caused some weaker dimensions and the life they contained to be destroyed in the process.
I dislike Doctor/Rose for a lot of reasons. They can be narrowed down to these things:
- Her relationship with Ten caused both characters to gain epic amounts of hubris and in the end, caused the personal growth of both of them to remain stagnant during most of Series 2. For Rose, she only seemed to grow a little bit by the time she was brought back in Series 4 but not much.
- There was an unused plot line where the Doctor basically manipulated Rose’s entire life to create a “perfect” companion for himself. The episode showing the culmination of this plot line was then replaced with Boomtown. Yes, it was replaced, but hints of it still remained in the overall series(Nine getting Rose her bike when she was 12). Now this is extremely fucked up to me for a lot of reasons, primarily because it highlights the unfair and unequal power dynamic that exits within the Doctor/Rose relationship. It also brings forth the issue of Rose’s overall autonomy and free will being taken from her by RTD, just so she can follow the typical ~True Love~ trope.
I know she’s the fave of a lot of people, but I can’t help feeling this way towards this character, especially after seeing the tremendous character growth we got to see in Martha, Donna, Rory, and Amy.
Like I’ve personally said before, I don’t hate Rose since that’s extreme, but I do dislike her. This pretty much sums up my feelings on her and her creepy, dependent relationship with the Doctor. Which robbed her of her agency as a character, she wasn’t able to grow from Series 1 to 2. It just got more dependent. I just felt it should’ve been about so much more than their relationship. She’s not the end all be all of the Doctor’s life.
I also dislike Rose (I don’t utterly loathe her, and I don’t usually if ever state anti-Rose sentiments because I know how many people love her). Basically:
This.
